Cape May County Clerk Rita Marie Fulginiti has issued a warning to property owners to be wary of mail or phone solicitations urging them to obtain a certified copy of their property deed. It is a scam.
According to Fulginiti, a recent mailer sent to Cape May County homeowners from "Local Records Office" urges them to obtain a certified copy of their property deed for a fee of $89. She noted that a certified copy of a land record is only necessary for court or other official matters and, if needed, can be obtained directly from the County Clerk at a cost of $14 to $17.
"This mail marketer from Ewing, NJ, is making a profit of $70 or more on each certified copy, which is readily available from the County Clerk's office," she said. Plain copies of property records are available in hard copy format for five cents per page or at no charge electronically from the Clerk's Land Records Access site http://126.96.36.199/ALIS/ww400R.PGM or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Noting that the County Clerk's Office is here to provide homeowners with reliable information and copies of their property records, Fulginiti urged those who received a property deed solicitation to call her at 609-465-1018 or visit her at her office at 7 North Main Street (Route 9) in Cape May Court House.
