“Fascism: A Warning,” a book recently published by Madeleine Albright, describes the nature of fascistic regimes and warns that the United States, under the presidency of Donald Trump and an obedient Congress, is moving in that direction.
Albright, the first woman to serve as this country’s Secretary of State, and later as America’s ambassador to the United Nations, has seen fascism up close and personal. Along with her parents, she escaped from her native Czechoslovakia just before World War II and invasion of her country by Germany. Many members of her family were not so fortunate and were killed during the Holocaust.
Albright describes a Fascist as ”someone who claims to speak for a whole nation or group, is utterly unconcerned with the rights of others, and is willing to use violence and whatever other means are necessary to achive the goals he or she might have.”
She notes that the close personal relationship between Trump and Russia’s Vladimir Putin, his willingness to adopt some of Putin’s policies and ignore Russia’s interference in our presidential election is a danger to our country.
”Fascism: A Warning” is a book that is not only relevant to our times but to all times. Written with wisdom by someone who has not only studied history but helped to shape it, this book teaches us the lessons we must understand and the questions we must answer if we are to save ourselves from repeating the tragic errors of the past.
