Sometimes what you read has a lasting impact that goes beyond the moment. Maybe that’s why I saved the following “letter to the editor” from Wallace Hunter of Erma, NJ, which appeared in the Cape May County Herald on January 18, 2017, under the headline “I Will Never Support Trump.”
”I read with a massive amount of cynicism that the right-wingers are all saying ‘we need to come together behind the president-elect and support him because if he fails we all fail.’ I will never support him regardless of what he says or does.
”The only thing I fail to see is where was all this kumbaya and talk of support when Obama was elected in 2008? All Mitch McConnell and John Boehner could say was ‘our only job is to see that he is a one-term president.’ There was no talk of support, only talk of what they could do to sabotage his presidency.
“Silly me, I thought their jobs were to represent the people of their states and the interest of the American people. I guess I was wrong.
“On Jan. 4, McConnell stated that the American people would be outraged if the Democrats attempt to block any Supreme Court nominee put forth by Trump. But if my memory serves me correctly, he has refused to allow a vote in the Senate for 10 months on Obama’s nominee Merrick Garland. He must have a very short memory or a lot of nerve to make that statement.
“I realize that I am but one voice howling at the moon, but I will continue to howl at the top of my lungs until Trump is impeached and thrown out of office, or I shuffle off this mortal coil.
“I spent 30 years in the armed services and I think he could ruin this country in just four years. Please God, bless this country and keep us safe until 2020.”
