National Night Out, established in 1984 to increase awareness of police programs and anti-crime efforts generally, has become a community event that mixes fun, food and togetherness throughout Cape May County. This year's events, on Tuesday, August 5, are a good example.
In Avalon, the event featuring prizes and activities for all ages, will be held in the parking lot adjacent to the north side of the Avalon Community Hall at 30th Street and the beach from 6 to 8 pm.
in Cape May, the event will be held at the Cape May Elementary School grounds on Lafayette Street with a variety of games and other activities from 6 to 8 pm.
Dennis Township is going all out with free hot dogs and sodas (first come, first served), face painting, music, games and fireworks at dusk. The event wil be held at the Dennis Township Recreational Complex at 565 Dennisville Road from 6 to 9 pm.
Lower Township will feature pony rides, complimentary refreshments and entertainment along with public safety displays at Lower Cape May Regional High School from 7 to 9 pm.
Middle Township's event, to held at the Clarence Davies Sports Complex from 6 to 9 pm, will start with a grand entrance by the Middle Township Marching Band, followed by free food, pony rides, face painting, blow-up bounce houses, a skateboard contest, an exhibition by Hamer's School of Karate, a K-9 demonstration by the Sheriff's Department and "jaws of life" demonstrations by the Cape May Court House and Goshen Fire Departments, the Middle Township Ambulance Corp and Rio Grande Rescue. Even Batman ad the Bat Mobile are expected to make an appearance.
North Wildwood's event, sponsored by the City of North Wildwood Police Dept. from 5:30 to 8:30 pm at the 8th Avenue Field, will entice one and all with a free barbeque, snow cones, games and a variety of activities for children including a dunk tank and hourly giveaways. A movie will be shown after dark.
Ocean City's night out will be a carnival-style event with music, food, bounce house, face painting and games at the Richard Grimes Sports Complex at 6th and Bay Avenues from 5 to 9 pm.
Stone Harbor will provide fun and games from 6 to 8 pm at the Water Tower Plaza at 95th Street and Second Avenue.
Wildwood invites the entire family to enjoy free games, food, prizes and a dunk tank from 5:30 to 8:30 pm at Fox Park, Ocean Avenue between Burk and Montgomery Avenues.
