The Middle Township Police Department is participating in a statewide program to remove unused, excess or expired prescription medications from homes — and potentially out of the hands of those who should not have them.
Middle Township's involvement in "Project Medicine Drop" is part of the New Jersey Attorney General's effort to stop the diversion and abuse of prescription drugs, including highly addictive opiate painkillers.
Through an initiative with the State Division of Consumer Affairs, the Middle Township Police have installed a secure "prescription drug drop box" in its lobby at 31 Mechanic Street, where prescription medications can be disposed of anonymously 24 hours a day, seven days a week and 365 days a year.
The Police Department has also obtained a Mobile Drop Box that will be taken to various events throughout the year to collect medications. The first of those events will be the Annual Harvest Festival on October 24th. Future events where the Mobile Drop Box will be available will be announced on Facebook and Twitter.
