The Work of the Quilts of Valor Continues On

The Cold Spring Brewery will host the South Jersey Quilts of Valor on May 4, 2017 to honor those who cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor. Members of the local chapter will be at the brewery from 4:00 until 8:00 to share information about their non-profit organization.

Cold Spring Brewery is located on Route 626 at 733 Seashore Road, three miles north of Cape May and a mile and a half west of the southern terminus of the Garden State Parkway.

Four Quilts of Valor awards will be presented to local veterans at the event and signature quilt blocks that are incorporated into future quilts will be available that you can sign to send a message to a veteran. Part of the sales proceeds from the event will be donated to the South Jersey Quilts of Valor Foundation.

Many local veterans have been awarded a Quilt of Valor from the local chapter over the last six years due to the passion of the group’s local founder, Nancy Thomson.  Nancy’s son, a Marine, was serving his third deployment in the Middle East when she came across a Quilts of Valor display at a quilt show in Delaware and she decided to learn more about it because it hit so close to home.  Little did she know at the time that her mission would inspire many other local quilters to get involved in covering those veterans touched by war.

Nancy quickly recruited her sister, Candy Moleff, and fellow guild members Crystal Smith and Liz Barrett.  They met in her basement to make quilt kits to share with other quilters and traveled to award quilts to veterans. Eventually they joined the international Quilts of Valor Foundation as a local chapter.  Today South Jersey Quilts of Valor has about 40 quilters, who meet once a month at workshops to create a variety of quilt patterns.

Last year the group awarded more than 100 quilts throughout South Jersey.  All of the supplies for the Quilts of Valor are donated or purchased with donations from local communities.  You can learn more about the Quilts of Valor Foundation at www.qovf.org.  To find out more about the local South Jersey Quilts of Valor, contact Ruth Ann Bosworth at SJQOV@hotmail.com.
