The following quotation from Martin Niemoller, on display at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, is particularly pertinent during the presidency of Donald Trump, when many individuals and groups are ridiculed or attacked by the president and those who follow him.
“First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out — because I was not a Socialist.
“Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out — because I was not a Trade Unionist.
“Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out — because I was not a Jew.
“Then they came for me — and there was no one left to speak for me.”
The quotation stems from Niemoller’s lectures following World War II. A prominent Protestant pastor and outspoken public foe of Adolf Hitler, Niemoller spent the last seven years of Nazi rule in concentration camps.
